In an article for the Water Well Journal by Alexandra Walsh, vice president of Association Vision, Walsh provides a number of human resource tips for small businesses. Among them are great snippets of advice such as “make your employees feel valued” and “communicate, communicate, communicate.”
These tips focus on issues such as onboarding and the employee handbook and policy. Walsh writes that engagement “in team meetings from day one will ensure a culture of teamwork.” With regard to communication, management should consider consulting with employees. This not only ensures a culture of teamwork but “will give them a sense of feeling valued.”
However, another great tip Alexandra Walsh writes regards the notion that small businesses should consider outsourcing their HR. While this may at first glance read counter-intuitive for businesses working to build employee engagement, it actually offers an incredible solution in developing meaningful employee engagement among co-workers.
In working with an HR consulting and employer services company, such as Xenium HR, leaders or managers can utilize resources and save time and to better engage with their employees. Walsh writes that “according to the Small Business Administration, small business owners spend anywhere between 7% and 25% of their time handling employee-related paperwork.” This is too much time to be wasted on the busywork behind what may be a very important and very real employee issue, one deserving great attention by management.
Outsourcing HR does not mean that an employer is missing out on employee engagement in order to resolve conflicts and build better relationships in the workplace. Rather, leadership can spend more time working with their employees to discuss the issues at hand on a more personal level. This is all made possible when the employer is offered advice on HR best practices and also given the opportunity to avoid the paperwork when such issues arise.
