One of my favorite things about our team is that it is full of people who genuinely love solving problems. Sam O’Neil, one of our Employee Experience Representatives, is a great example. He is quick to jump in, takes pride in being someone’s first introduction to Xenium HR, and has strong opinions about film. I sat down with Sam to learn more about his work, what he is watching in our industry, and where he is headed next.
Tell us about your role and what energizes you about the work.
I am an Employee Experience Representative. I see my role as the first line of defense, addressing smaller issues before they can clog up our operations. We do a little of everything, and anytime we can take something off another team’s plate, we’re all over it. I’m a natural problem solver, and this work truly scratches that itch.
What changes in HR and payroll have surprised or shaped you the most?
The federal government has been rather turbulent in recent years, and that instability continues to affect our industry. From government shutdowns impacting various processes to changes like eliminating taxes on tipped and overtime wages, there have already been notable shifts. I anticipate many more changes that will have long-lasting effects on how we operate.
What trends or challenges should clients keep an eye on?
I don’t think the remote or hybrid workforce is going away anytime soon. However, we’re still in a transitional phase as businesses determine how they want to move forward. Navigating this evolving work model will continue to be a challenge for clients.
What’s a moment in your work you’re especially proud of?
Our team conducts new hire orientations for various clients, and for many employees, we’re their first introduction to what Xenium HR can do for them. A strong first impression goes a long way in shaping future interactions. It’s very important to me to enhance the employee experience in any way I can. I take pride in easing first-day jitters for each and every new employee I work with, and I know that support benefits our clients as well.
What advice would you give to someone joining our industry today?
If you learn to embrace an ever-changing professional landscape, you will thrive!
Can you share a meaningful client experience that stuck with you?
Our purpose on this team is to support the employees of our clients. There have been countless meaningful moments: helping someone understand their benefits, secure housing through an employment verification, or navigate a difficult workplace situation. Those experiences mean a lot to me and strongly reaffirm my purpose in this role.
How do you hope to grow in your role, and what excites you about what’s ahead?
I’m still new to the HR career path, but I know I’m exactly where I should be. By the end of the year, I plan to obtain either a SHRM or PHR certification. I’m excited to see where this path leads. I approach every professional opportunity with a strong desire to learn, and that mindset helps me grow through every new experience I’m fortunate enough to take on.
What’s something your coworkers would be surprised to learn about you?
If you want me to talk your ear off, bring up film. I am a cine-FREAK.
