On February 21, 2013, Valerie and Roger Pease visited Xenium for the second consecutive year to speak on emotional intelligence. This time, however, the Pease’s taught the 70+ audience members how to have Difficult Conversations.
Roger and Valerie Pease present Difficult Conversations at XeniumDuring the session, the point was made that most, if not all, of us have difficult conversations that need to take place in our personal or professional lives; and we may avoiding or executing improperly altogether.
The Pease’s made the distinction early on in the morning that most of us attempt to argue a point from the left side of the brain—the rational side—when in actuality, the right side of the brain—the emotional side—is the side responsible for making a connection with the person we are speaking to.
To prove the point, Roger and Valerie Pease showed the following video of a mother and baby interacting, called the “Still Face Experiment.” Notice what happens when the mother makes an emotional connection versus a non-emotional one; it’s really quite amazing.
Within the two-hour session, the Pease’s provided all attendees with a guide and frame-work to have an emotionally-driven, difficult conversation with our family, friends and co-workers. Most of the session involved partner role-playing of real scenarios, which allowed everyone to put the ideas into practice!
