In addition to House Bill 2950 signed on June 13, 2013, Governor Kitzhaber signed Oregon House Bill 2683, which allows Oregon employers to pay employees via direct deposit without an employee’s agreement. Important things for employers to note, as reported by Barran Liebman, include the following:

  • Even if direct deposit is the default method of payment, employers must pay wages to an employee by check upon a written or verbal request from the employee.
  • Employers may not charge the employee or deduct a fee to cover the expense of processing through direct deposit.
  • Employers must always provide a wage statement on payday physically or electronically.

It’s recommended that employers using direct deposit prepare for this new law, effective January 1, 2014, by updating policies and forms.
