Organizations striving for the next level in terms of growth are often looking for that one thing that can get them over the hump. A killer product or service can take a company to success in its early years, however, it is the employees who end up having the greatest impact on the advancement of the business in the long-term.
If employees are such a key component to a successful future, one should ask, “what ultimately drives employees to be engaged in what they are doing?” In many cases the culture of the organization is the largest factor in maintaining employee engagement with their work (see “Delivering Happiness Book Commentary – Fostering Company Culture”).
There are many ways business leaders and HR professionals can improve or create their vision of their company culture. One of the ways in which a lot of companies have success is celebration.
A celebration is social engagement marking a specific event, and in the case of an organization it is a chance to give special recognition and praise something that is much bigger than any one person. Employees have an opportunity to come together to socialize, get to know one another, take a break from tasks, and share the excitement of an event. These events could be planned and executed by a Culture Team.
Here are some examples of events that some organizations celebrate:
- Reaching sales goals
- Profitability benchmarks
- High customer satisfaction survey results
- Monthly birthday celebrations (e.g. celebrate all April birthdays in one company party)
- Holidays
- Work anniversaries
- Celebrate wins
- Accomplishment of a new initiative
- Company and employee awards
