The retention of talent is an issue many companies are facing. This can be due to overwork, lack of supportive culture, or the growing number of organizations that just seem to “get it” and attract applicants by the hundreds (I’m looking at you, Google).
Stacy Carroll, President of HR Experts On-Call, writes that retaining talent really involves employers and managers being “in touch with the needs of [their] employees.”
Getting a better sense of your employee, and subsequently their attitude towards your company, can be done in a number of ways. Carroll encourages something that we repeatedly read about: persistent and regular feedback. Business leadership books and blogs repeatedly bring this suggestion up, and this is because it’s a good point.
However, Carroll asks for a more personal touch to this exchange with employees. Rather than just provide feedback, a manager must also be a team player and take a genuine interest in the short-term and long-term goals of their employees. This will not only provide amazing insight into the employee, but also their relationship with you as their employer or manager.
