As we observe Veterans Day this week, it’s a great time to review key rights that veterans have in employment.
There have been over two million troop deployments since September 11, 2001, nearly 800,000 of which are National Guard and Reserve members. Approximately 40,000 troops are still in Iraq, but they are scheduled to leave by the end of the year. The Department of Labor has experienced a tremendous increase in the number of inquiries about veterans’ rights. Here’s a quick reminder about key rights.
Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) anti-discrimination and reemployment rights. USERRA prohibits all employers from discriminating against employees or applicants on the basis of their military status or obligations. It also protects the reemployment rights of those who leave civilian jobs to serve in the uniformed services, including the U.S. Reserve forces and state National Guards, and make a timely demand for reemployment.
