I am the Lead Coordinator in the payroll department at Xenium. I’ve been with the company for one year this June 2024!

Tell me about your career progression and what led you to work at Xenium?

My career started in sales, from door-to-door solar panels to DEI business development, my work has always been people-focused. Over the years, I expanded my skills and took on more responsibilities, eventually leading teams and training others. A friend’s enthusiastic recommendation of Xenium piqued my interest, and her confidence in the company’s culture and values convinced me to join. Since then, I’ve grown into my current role as Lead Coordinator.

What is your favorite part of working for an outsourced HR and payroll firm?

My favorite part is the variety and impact of our work. Every day presents new challenges and opportunities to support different businesses, ensuring they run smoothly and efficiently. The diversity of clients keeps the work dynamic and rewarding.

What has changed over the years in your experience in this field?

The most significant changes have been driven by technology and regulations. Automation and advanced software have streamlined many payroll processes, increasing accuracy and efficiency. At the same time, evolving tax laws and employment regulations require continuous learning and adaptation to ensure compliance and best practices.

What are the challenges facing our industry in the near and long term?

One of the main challenges is the competition from internal HR departments, especially for small to mid-sized businesses. Many companies consider bringing HR functions in-house to have more direct control. Additionally, staying ahead of technological advancements and adapting to regulatory changes will continue to be critical challenges.

Can you tell me about a project or accomplishment that you are particularly proud of?

One project that stands out was a comprehensive process improvement initiative I led for the payroll team around return live checks. Previously tracked on a spreadsheet with many manual updates, we significantly reduced processing times and error rates by utilizing our current software. This project not only improved efficiency but also enhanced client satisfaction.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in this field?

My advice is to stay curious and be proactive about learning. The payroll and HR fields are constantly evolving, so keeping up with the latest trends and regulations is crucial. Building strong relationships and communication skills is also essential, as they help manage client expectations and resolve issues effectively.

Can you tell us about your best memory working with a client?

One of my best memories was helping a small business navigate a complex payroll tax issue. The client was extremely stressed and unsure how to proceed. By working closely with them and our tax team, we resolved the issue efficiently. The client’s gratitude and relief were immensely rewarding, reinforcing why I love this work.

How do you see your role evolving in the future, and what are your goals?

I see my role evolving to include more strategic planning and leadership responsibilities. My goal is to continue driving process improvements and leveraging technology to enhance our services. I also aim to mentor and develop our team, helping others grow their careers in payroll and HR.

What do you wish more people knew about working in our industry?

I wish more people understood the critical role that payroll and HR play in the success of businesses. It’s not just about processing paychecks; it’s about ensuring compliance, supporting employee well-being, and contributing to the overall health of the organization. The impact we have on businesses and their employees is significant and deeply rewarding.
