As reported by Barran Liebman, the Portland City Council has defined proposed rules for the new Sick Leave Ordinance. The city will consider written comments from the public before finalizing the rules on or before November 1, 2013.
Effective January 1, 2014, Portland employers with six or more employees will be required to provide up to 40 hours of paid sick leave to those working at least 240 hours per year. Employers with less than five employees will be required to provide 40 hours of unpaid sick leave. This time-off may be used for reasons including:

  • An employee’s personal mental or physical illness (pregnancy, childbirth and preventive medical care)
  • To care for a family member with an illness, injury or medical appointment
  • If the employee’s place of business closes for a public health emergency, or to care for a child whose school or day care closes for a similar reason
  • Certain reasons related to domestic violence, harassment, sexual assault or stalking
