When you think of the engine that keeps Xenium running smoothly behind the scenes, you’re thinking of Dena. She leads with a calm, analytical approach and a deep understanding of the systems that keep clients and teams supported. From onboarding new clients to implementing new technology, she ensures everything at Xenium functions with precision and purpose.
What is your role at Xenium, and how long have you worked here?
I’m the Director of Business Operations and Continuous Improvement, leading the Implementation, HRIS, and Operations teams. On any given day, I might be working on a new client onboarding project, partnering with our HRIS Supervisor on a Prism feature rollout, or supporting our Operations team with licensing and invoicing questions. I’ve been in this role for two years and have been part of the Operations department at Xenium for 14 years.
Tell me about your career progression and what led you to Xenium.
I started at Xenium in 2011 as an Operations Assistant. At the time, I was working a front-desk position in Eugene and looking for a role that better aligned with my business degree. I initially thought I’d pursue a career in HR, and Xenium was a great place to gain that experience. But once I joined Operations, I knew I’d found my place—and I’ve stayed ever since!
What’s your favorite part about working for an outsourced HR and payroll firm?
Every day is different. There’s always a new challenge or process to improve, so the work never gets boring. I love solving problems and finding ways to make things run better for both our team and our clients.
What has changed over the years in your field?
The growing importance of technology and automation. Our industry is complex and constantly evolving, and leveraging systems has become vital to maintaining exceptional client service. It’s about balancing innovation with the human touch that defines our client experience.
What challenges do you see for our industry in the near and long term?
Keeping up with regulatory and compliance changes—from tax law to state and federal employment regulations—is a huge and ongoing challenge. The pace of change requires constant vigilance and adaptability.
Can you tell me about a project or accomplishment you’re particularly proud of?
I recently completed advanced training on our CRM tool, which we use to track client account information. It pushed me technically, but it’s been exciting to expand my capabilities and develop the program further to better serve Xenium’s needs. I love that I get to keep learning and improving our systems.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in this field?
Be a sponge—stay curious and open to every experience that comes your way. Don’t be afraid to roll up your sleeves and dive in. Most of my learning has come from hands-on work—understanding challenges, testing solutions, and growing alongside our teams and clients.
Can you share a favorite client memory?
I can think of many moments after a new client was onboarded when they shared how much of a difference Xenium was already making. Helping a business move from feeling isolated to feeling supported—that’s always rewarding.
What do you wish more people knew about working in our industry?
The complexity and nuance of HR and payroll are enormous. It’s not uncommon for us to uncover issues like mishandled payroll or taxes from prior providers during onboarding. The collective expertise of our team is an incredible asset, and it’s what ensures accuracy and peace of mind for our clients.
