What is your name, and what is your position at Xenium?
My name is Elizabeth Thurston, and I am a Benefits Specialist II.
How long have you been with Xenium?
I’ve been with the company for over three years. I was hired during the heart of the pandemic.
What was that like? Starting a new job in the middle of the pandemic?
I was furloughed from my previous job and unemployment was about to end, so I thought I better start looking for a new position. This was the first job I applied for, and I am so happy that fate brought me here!
Can you tell me about your role in the benefits department and how it contributes to the employee experience at our clients?
Being in benefits provides accessibility to employees, bridges the gap between the unknown, and helps individuals get where they need to be, allowing them to be their best selves. There is often jargon or unfamiliar terms that employees don’t understand, but benefits are of great importance to employees in understanding and utilizing them. I feel we directly provide the experience for employees to get what they need regarding their benefits and more!
You had some HR background before coming to Xenium, right? You did more things in the HR arena, like leave management, and supported some things. What led you to specialize in benefits?
Leaves and case management was more complex with hardships and the downsides to life. This didn’t bother me because I enjoy helping people in their darkest times and seeing them through life’s transitions. My role now is a bit more diverse with positive aspects to educate employees on. On the other hand, benefits are also quite straightforward – here is the policy and here’s how we support/administer that- so it’s less taxing. Open Enrollment is another story though.
What are some of your primary responsibilities in managing benefits in your role? What’s a typical day like?
I build a lot of relationships with clients to understand their needs, with employees to understand their requests, and then with the insurance carriers themselves to make the “magic” happen. Benefits can be quite personable in the day-to-day tasks and I like making connections with individuals.
How do you stay updated with the constantly changing landscape of employee benefits to ensure we provide valuable service to clients?
We have a great team that communicates daily. If we hear something new, we research it together and figure out how to roll it out to the client. It’s a team effort to stay on top of compliance and changing laws. Subscriptions to reputable benefit sources is helpful too.
What are you really proud of in terms of accomplishments or things you’ve worked on here?
I’m most proud of the benefit reconciliation process. It’s grown exponentially, and I’ve learned so much, from knowing nothing about it initially to taking ownership of the process. Properly managing our clients requires a lot of attention to detail, uncovering patterns and trends, and problem resolution with insurance carriers.
What important considerations should employers keep in mind when designing or implementing benefits packages? Any trends you’re seeing?
Typically, employers will need to decide whether they want low premiums and higher deductibles, while others who can’t afford high out-of-pocket costs will decide to pay more in premiums throughout the year. It depends on the workforce’s income levels to determine the best options for their employees. Offering both high-deductible and low-deductible plan options can provide the best of both worlds because employes like choices and feel like they are a part of the consumer process with health care. Also it’s great to take advantage of tax savings in the form of flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts!
How do you assist clients in navigating complicated benefits questions? How would clients describe working with you?
My goal is always top-notch service and client satisfaction. I anticipate people’s needs and go beyond the initial question to provide thorough support so they don’t have to come back with follow-ups.
What do you like most about working on the benefits team?
I love our team – everyone is friendly, helpful, and like-minded in wanting the best for our clients. I also like that Xenium is empowering – if I have a question I don’t know the answer to, I can research it and report back and then be a subject matter expert. All employees are valued contributors regardless of their role or position.
Are there any committees or other things you are involved in at Xenium right now?
Yes I am involved in XCITE, a group of members from all different departments who strive to build our company culture and make our environment warm, friendly, inviting, and inclusive. I love being a part of that. It’s fun but also keeps a pulse on what’s happening within Xenium and I get to collaborate with folks that I would never otherwise have an opportunity to connect with.
Can you share a success story or memorable experience helping a client or employee?
We are currently navigating implementing Oregon Paid Family Leave and coordinating it with disability benefits, which is new for everyone. We were able to work through our first successful case together and get an employee paid out properly from both entities which of course allows the employee to shift their focus on getting better and returning to work.
How do you collaborate with other departments to ensure a seamless experience?
We work closely with payroll on benefit deductions, leave of absence or disability considerations, and communicating impacts to the client with premiums. HR will often learn of a benefit related request first that they can then pass along to me to follow up on, so constant communication ensures everyone is on the same page.
Lastly, how would you describe what it’s like to work at Xenium?
Xenium is never boring! I get to learn about many different insurance plans and carriers – every day is new. I like the challenge of always having more to learn. I love the flexibility Xenium offers and see myself here long term – I’m already planning my ten-year sabbatical!
